Discussions were held on Turkish application on joining EU and her place in Europe in which journalists from Belarus shown huge interest.

Ibrahim Ozturk replied upon a question of a journalist saying that “Those who run the country; Turkey, have not accomplished good job so far. Turkey has not managed to create an approach no more than very simplistic way. There have been many crises in Turkey last number of decades. Turkish people, through these crises, have seen years of hunger, stress and military coup’s. Frankly speaking, Turkish people have taken pro-European stance just because of crisis rather than love of Europe.  Most of them have become a supporter of joining EU to get away from these crises. It has been more than %80 of Turkish public would have supported this application a year ago but it has drop to a level between %50 to %60 because of the sayings of Sarkozy and Merkel against the process, respectively premier of France and Chancellor of Germany.

Huseyin Gulerce continued by saying ‘A mere %25 of the public were supporting this application around 40 years ago. The conservative people did oppose the application for number of reasons, they are 1- free movement of the people and 2- the lands in Turkey could be bought by foreigners. But Turkey has a young and dynamic population who has high self-esteem and trust in themselves. The most suitable way for democratisation of Turkey is joining EU. The current support for the application is around %60. Many big civil movements/initiatives of Turkey support the application. Those who do not support it, expressed their disagreement loudly anyway.’

A question from a journalist diverted to mr. Gulerce. Can you explain this Ergenekon case for us? How do you see the case now as it has reached to Northern Cyprus?

‘If we want to understand this case we have to look into Gladio case in Italy which is a very good example for that. The prosecutor who opened this case in Italy Felipo Casson has recently been in Turkey. He explained in his talk saying that this gladio case continued 7 years.US and Great Britain established secret governing body in the member countries of NATO. These secret institutions inside the country initially were intented to fight against the danger of communism but later on they got out of control and had contacts with national and international mafias. They started to do illegal works, killings etc. All they wanted to do was to control the country by creating more chaos between people groups from various backgrounds, schools of thoughts in the country. This was not going to go on if you intend to create a union like EU. These secret governing bodies one by one have been eliminated. Turkey has to do the same. The biggest threat to the democracy of Turkey is this secret illegal body. Cyprus issue also is the biggest obstacle for joining EU. For that it is not extraordinary to see that this case is extended to Northern Cyprus now. The prime Minister of Northern Cyprus personally dealing with the issue. They will create a special commission at their parliament for this issue. Certain arrests been made during the case created tensions and society has become polarised. Felipo Casson said that during the galdio case Italy had seen similar tensions and Turkey has to go through the same route.

Have many have been arrested for this case so far? Are there any military officials who are under arrest? Mr Gulerce replied; there are about hundred people under arrest with the recent raids. This is the tip of the iceberg and the operational part of the secret body. Prosecutors have not reached the brain behind them yet. There are two ex-generals among them. .
